Rustons Rose Garden is one of the largest private rose gardens in the Southern Hemisphere, decorated with the prestigious title of Australia's National Rose Collection.

Description

The property was originally developed as a fruit orchard by Cuthbert Ruston who received the parcel of land as a soldier settlement. Cuthbert's son David indulged his passion for roses by planting them wherever he could, converting the property exclusively to roses by the mid 1970s. During his long involvement with horticulture, David came to be recognised internationally as an expert in roses, gaining esteemed awards for his contributions including the President Emeritus Award, and the Dean Hole Medal from the Royal National Rose Society of England. He received an Order of Australia Medal in 1984 for his services to floriculture.

After a recent period of decline, the rose garden is currently being restored with big plans of redevelopment. In addition to a diverse collection of rose varieties, extended plantings of Mister Lincoln and Radio Times, which are popular with the cut flower and petal industry. Several historic ornament pieces can be found around the garden including a tribute to none other than David Ruston.
