Description

Meander through the wetlands and creeks of the Border Cliffs section of the Chowilla Game Reserve beside the Murray River in Murtho, experiencing the majestic River Red Gums and abundant birdlife.

Border Cliffs Customs House Walking Trail is located at the northern end of the Border Cliffs campground in the Chowilla Game Reserve, and will take approx. one and a half hours return walk. The hike can be started from either the carpark beside the Customs House boatramp (total return trail distance is 4.1km) or from the carpark beside the campground area (total return trail distance is 3.5km)

On your walk you will discover this special wetland system and it is worth taking the 350 metre detour to the lagoon to observe a variety of native birds including great egrets, superb fairy-wrens and white-faced herons. The end (turn around point) of this trail section is indistinct, but it is actually a peninsula into the wetlands, when the trail and land becomes unclear. Return to the main path and take-in excellent views of the Murray River sandstone cliffs in the distance. Along the way, watch for parrots, bats, possums, kookaburras, kangaroos, lizards and other wildlife. There are also other camping areas closer to the carpark inside Chowilla Game Reserve. Sites are bookable onlline.

The old Customs House is very close to the South Australian/Victorian border and operated from 1884 until 1904 during which time river boats had to pay taxes at the borders of the three states (colonies - prior to Australia’s federation). The old Customs House is now a private residence though is open for refreshments and is the base for Customs House Houseboats.
