Description
Moored on the magnificent Renmark Riverfront, the fully restored Paddle Steamer Industry offers an opportunity to step back in time and be reminded of a bygone era along the Murray River.
The PS Industry was built at Goolwa by the State Government and commissioned in 1911 as a work boat for the SA Engineering and Water Supply Department (now SA Water). It was designed specifically to remove snags from the river, clearing the passage for other river steamers and to drive piles where needed. The Industry was later used in the construction and maintenance of the locks and weirs.
When Renmark was threatened by the highest water levels ever recorded along the Murray during the 1956 flood, the Industry stood by with steam up, ready to evacuate those who remained during those critical days of the flood when a total evacuation appeared imminent. After retiring in 1969 from active duty, the Industry became a static museum until 1990 when she was carefully restored by the hard work of a group of volunteers.
Now you can experience this bygone era with a scenic 60-minute cruise onboard the historic PS Industry.
Cruise upstream and take in the majestic river gums, breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife whilst listening to the distinctive sounds of the paddle wheels as they hit the water and the hiss of steam as the whistle blows. Watch the wood fire boiler being stoked on this authentic and well-maintained vessel whilst being entertained by the captain’s commentary as they share stories of her rich heritage.
A range of historical photos and memorabilia can be viewed onboard, with souvenirs available for purchase.
The vessel is also available for private charter groups and is often included in visiting group itineraries. Please direct any inquiries to the Renmark Visitor Centre for further information.
